I found my self forgetting the present in the embrace of the past.
There was a time when I was a grad student when I just had to stop and let go. I found my self one night in Vigan. The trip was unplanned.
Vigan is 404 kilometers north of Manila. It was an Asian trading post before the Spaniards came. It then became the capital of the encomienda of Juan de Salcedo in the 16th century. Hence, the mixture of Oriental and Spanish influences in its architecture.

Organic Christmas tree. Dried vegetables and fruits made up this Chirstmas tree. When I arrived in Vigan late 2006, this is the first thing I saw.

St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral. The present church was completed in 1800. It has a facade that reflects Vigan’s Chinese heritage.

Calle Crisologo is beautifully eerie at night.

Simbaan A Bassit or the Small Church is a cemetary chapel. It is the only chapel in the Ilocos Region with a Bell-gable design.

Bantay belfry built in 1590 was my last stop before leaving Vigan.
There were plenty of things that I didn’t see but I had to go.
I left Vigan refreshed even for just 12 hours, ready to wrestle with that dissertation once again.

Dinayo ko rin ang Vigan back in 2008 during my 2-month “summer/christmas break” from grad school after some realization that I can’t answer with passion the most common question: “So, what is there to see in the Philippines?”

I’ve been to the Ilocos region twice… once in a trip around Vigan (with Ateneo ESS) and once just with friends (summer 2011) – a 4-day leg starting from Pagudpud and working our way south…
The last trip was amazing, possibly because I was seeing it from the eyes of a “foreigner/stranger” really and I got to appreciate the natural places to see in our country as well as some subtle regional differences in various things like in food… Beyond, well, bagnet and pinakbet, I got to try new dishes I’ve never tried before like baradibod and pipian which were both great.
Like Reese, I also want to be able to say that I’ve been to “the places worth visiting in my country” so that I could showcase our country more… also because I would find it astounding if I got to visit a lot of cities in other countries (like Italy, for example) yet I have not seen as much from back home.
