DAY 5: Fall in Love, Stay in Love, and It will decide everything

The last entry for Valentine’s Day countdown starts with this quote from a video that I saw in 2010. It was part of Ateneo de Manila University’s graduation AVP for the graduating batch of 2010. The video is a little bit nostalgic for me (as it shows landmarks in the university, legendary professors, and people you interact with everyday) but towards the end, there’s a beautiful quote.:

And so, I send you with these words:
Because the world is poor and starving, go with bread.
Because the world is filled with fear, go with courage.
Because the world is in despair, go with hope.
Because the world is living lies, go with truth.
Because the world is sick with sorrow, go with joy.
Because the world is weary of wars, go with peace.
Because the world is seldom fair, go with justice.
Because the world is under judgment, go with mercy.
Because the world will die without it, go with love.

I wanted to end the countdown with this because it summarizes the importance of love. Despite it’s seemingly whimsical nature, love encompasses everything; love knows no bounds, it brings us to life (Day 1). It allows us to dream of better things, of hoping, of committing (Day 2). Love also imparts a sense of identity because only by being true to ourselves can we start to share and give love (Day 3). It tells us that despite all the hardships, love survives even in the face of death (Day 4). Love is so important that the world would stop, it would die without it.

Because of love, not only can we transform ourselves and grow, but moreso transform others, transform society. They say a little bit of kindness goes a long way, and I say the same about love. We can see it in all the examples from the different days, from a family who learns to love and cherish one another (Love of Siam), to enemies that resolve their differences by seeing they are the same (Pocahontas). We see how love transforms hate, arrogance and bitterness (Beauty and the Beast) and even changes the way we view life in general (Tuesdays with Morrie). We acknowledge that the best way to measure our life is through love (Rent).

And so, I leave you with yet another powerful quote. This time, a prayer by Fr. Pedro Arrupe, SJ.

Nothing is more practical than
finding God, than
falling in Love
in a quite absolute, final way.
What you are in love with,
what seizes your imagination, will affect everything.
It will decide
what will get you out of bed in the morning,
what you do with your evenings,
how you spend your weekends,
what you read, whom you know,
what breaks your heart,
and what amazes you with joy and gratitude.
Fall in Love, stay in love,
and it will decide everything.
